“Unbreakable Education” is Ukraine’s programme to keep schools and learning available to all children, despite the war conditions. In the worst-hit areas of the country, education is either delivered remotely, or schools have been rebuilt in bomb-proof locations, usually underground. The Ministry for Science and Education is adapting and innovating rapidly, and at a time when technology can help more than ever, budgets are stretched.
There’s where donations of high-end interactive whiteboards are a massive boost.
Reusing IT has already sent a shipment of donated Promethean smartboards to Ukraine, and more are in the pipeline. These smartboards can be used even when lighting conditions are not ideal, and can connect to a range of other devices. So regardless of the laptop or device that the teacher has access to, or the condition of the school, they can connect to the digital whiteboard to deliver prepared lessons, as well as bringing in a whole range of other resources – invaluable when it’s hard to access resources in the usual way.
Regardless of the learning circumstances, the latest generation of smartboards create an exciting and interactive learning environment – excellent in itself given the difficulties that children are living through in Ukraine, but it also means that Ukrainian children are not left behind in terms of the benefits this mode of learning can bring. Technological help to deliver a fun and even to have the option of a gamefication style of leaning is a huge boost in grim circumstances. As a bonus, the boards can save on supplies of paper for handouts, and the multi-media lessons can be saved and sent out to students studying remotely.
Feedback from teachers in Ukraine has been overwhelmingly positive. “When the children came into the classroom and saw the Promethean screens for the first time, it was a huge motivation boost. It makes them feel that, despite everything that’s going on, their learning is important. For children who have a lot of distractions in their life, having something that’s really nice helps them to focus, makes them feel good.”
With the stress of war a constant backdrop to daily life, donations of smartboards for Ukrainian schools and colleges offers an enhanced learning experience, and a powerful tool to overcome many of the difficulties in education posed by the war.
