Bukoba, Tanzania – 2000. A group of secondary school children from Balerno High School, near Edinburgh, accompanied Reusing IT on a trip to deliver computers to schools in Tanzania.
A teacher at Balerno High School, Sarah Roberts, had approached the charity about taking a group of her pupils to Tanzania, and Ross Cockburn, Reusing IT’s founder, was delighted to make it happen. Sarah herself is a fluent Swahili speaker, so her presence on the trip was also invaluable in helping with communication.
“You can see the enjoyment etched on the pupils’ faces in this photo,” says Ross. “The Scottish children are showing their peers in Bukoba how to navigate using a mouse. It was a joy to see children from completely different backgrounds enjoying the simple pleasure of doing something together, a shared experience.”
A total of 500 computers were delivered to 20 schools and one university across the region.
